Ani DiFranco has taken an extremely introspective approach to her music, attracting a bevy of fans to her open, honest lyrics.
The singer began her career at nine years of age when she began playing Beatles covers at coffeehouses in the Buffalo, NY, area. She began composing at 14 and started to perform at clubs after moving out of her family home. By 19, DiFranco moved to New York City. She made 500 copies of a cassette and quickly sold out at her shows. Shortly thereafter, she created the Righteous Babe record label and began to sell her music to the devout following she had developed.
DiFranco has always been a touring force, even when it was out of her Volkswagen. In the beginning, it was these shows that allowed her to cultivate her image - she had tattoos, body piercing and a shaved head, and she was openly bisexual, very much a feminist, and wrote about tough issues such as abortion and rape.
In 1992 she released 'Imperfectly" and the next year put out "Puddle Dive" - she began to create buzz in the mainstream, but refused to sign with a bigger label, opting to stick with Righteous Babe. She played around 200 shows per year, and released popular albums such as "Out of Range" in 1994 and "Not a Pretty Girl" the next year. In 1996, "Dilate" debuted on Billboards Top 100 albums, which is a great accomplishment for an independent artist.
DiFranco really seemed to hit her stride in the late '90s. "Little Plastic Castle" from 1998 was her highest-charting album, and "Up Up Up Up Up Up" was also very popular from the following year. She continued on with a number of albums, all of which were devoured by her fan base. In fact, she has released an album every year she has been in the business.
The singer continued to tour relentlessly into the past decade, although she developed tendonitis in 2005 and became pregnant later that year - however, she continued to work. DiFranco released "Reprieve" in the summer of 2006, and has been venturing back into touring since her respite in 2005.
