Andre Rieu had led the charge for an international revival of waltz music, finding much success with the Johann Strauss Orchestra.
Andre Leon Marie Nicolas Rieu was born in the Netherlends, where he began studying violin at the tender age of five. He studied at a number of musical academies, where he developed a fascination with the waltz. He created the Johann Strauss Orchestra and his own production company in 1987. Since then, he has presented the waltz with melodramatic stage performances and with rock star antics, bringing attention back to the craft.
The Orchestra began as a twelve-member outfit but now boasts upward of fifty musicians. The group first toured the Netherlands and extended through Europe. Eventually, they traveled through North America and Japan, selling millions of records worldwide.
The flavorful performances from Rieu and the orchestra has created fans that otherwise would have been uninterested - they are known for performing classical music as well as popular and folk hits, in addition to songs from famous film and theatrical productions.
As the group has found worldwide fame, Rieu often travels as a solo performer with his 1667 Stradivarius violin. Solo performances have been recorded and released all over the world, including "Andre Rieu Live in Dublin” in 2003 and "Andre Rieu Live in Tuscany” in 2005.
