Alabama

News and Information
Alabama was the most successful country act in the 80s, fusing southern rock, gospel and pop with the traditional sounds. They paved the way for group success in a genre when solo acts were most successful.

The band was formed by cousins Jeff Cook, Mark Herndon, Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry in 1969 as Young Country. The quartet won a high school talent competition and by 1973 they decided to pursue a music career, touring nightspots in clubs across the Southeast.

The band released their first album, "My Homes in Alabama," in 1980. The title track has become their signature song, and the track "I Wanna Come Over" was also a hit. This album began a string of success, including 21 No.1 singles on the Billboard Country charts. Hits from this time included "Mountain Music," "Take Me Down," "Theres No Way" and "She and I."

The bands enormous success lasted to the end of the decade, and continued with six additional No.1 country singles in the 90s. The group slowed their recording schedule in recent years, embarking on a "Farewell Tour" in 2003 and 2004. They most recently released two albums of inspirational music in 2006 and 2007.

The legendary artists received two Grammy Awards for ''Best Country Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal," and they have also taken home a number of Country Music Association and American Music Awards over the years, and were also inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
