Al Di Meola is jazz fusion artist, a guitarist with strong Latin influences that has endeared him to millions of fans over this three-decade career. Di Meola enrolled in the Berklee College of Music in Boston after growing up in New Jersey. Three years later, he joined Return to Forever, Chich Coreas band, and stayed with the group for two years. After the band had a massive lineup change, the artist went on to explore a number of different styles of guitar. He is best known for his Latin jazz - he won the Best Jazz Guitarist award from Guitar Player Magazines Reader Poll.
His first solo album, "Land of the Midnight Sun" in 1976, was known for boasting amazing technical skills for his fast, complex arrangements. His earlier albums had more of a Mediterranean vibe, which eventually moved into flamenco and other Latin flavors. Di Meolas next album, 1977s "Elegant Gypsy," was influential to his fellow artists - he toured another famous Latin artist, Carlos Santana, in 1980.
Throughout DiMeolas career, he has explored both electric and acoustic sounds, with amazing mastery of both. In the 1990s, he began to incorporate synthesizers into his music as well.
In 2006, the legendary artist released "Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar," and has been touring behind the release at intimate venues across the globe.
The artist has been praised by many critics in his day. Guitar historian Robery Lynch has said, "In the history of the eclectic guitar, no one figure has done more to advance the instrument in a purely technical manner than Mr. Di Meola. His total command of the various styles and scales is simply mind boggling."
