AFI, short for A Fire Inside, started off as a hardcore punk group in the early 90s and have developed into a trend setting alt rock collective.
High schoolers Davek Havok, Mark Stopholese, Adam Carson and Vic Chalker formed the band in 1991, with no knowledge of any instruments. Eventually they learned their respective gadgets and developed a following.
After separating for college, the members reunited for one show and decided to drop out of school and play together for good. The group released a number of EPs between 1993 and 1995, and in 1995 they released "Answer That and Stay Fashionable." In 1996, "Very Proud of Ya" was released. Two tracks from the latter were showcased in the independent film "Mary Janes Not a Virgin Anymore."
Mainstream success came for the band in 2002 after the release of "Sing the Sorrow." The singles "Girls Not Grey," "The Leaving Song Pt. II" and "Silver and Cold" had chart success, and they won an MTV Video Music Award for video for "Girls Not Grey."
In June of 2006 a new lineup, including Jade Puget and Hunter Burgan, released "Decemberundergound." The first single, "Miss Muder" was extremely successful, as was "Love Like Winter."
Near the end of 2007, AFI released the live album "I Heard a Voice," recorded from Long Beach Arena.
