Acoustic Alchemy

News and Information
Acoustic Alchemy brought contemporary smooth jazz across the globe fronted by two acoustic guitarists.

Simon James and Nick Webb on nylon and steel guitars, respectively, joined forces in 1981 to bring light to smooth jazz in Britain, when most of the successful artists in the genre were American. The two were often complimented by double bass, percussion and a string quartet.

Eventually, James was replaced by Greg Carmichael and the duo became an in-flight band on Virgin Atlantic flights to the U.S. They were discovered in the U.S. and released "Red Dust and Spanish Lace" in 1987. The album was extremely successful, including the Chinese/reggae track "Mr. Chow." "Natural Elements" followed in 1988 and "Blue Chip" in 1989.

The group found success on the worlds biggest jazz label, GPR Records. They put out six more albums, including the critically acclaimed "Back on the Case." In 1998, Webb died before releasing the bands ninth album, "Positive Thinking." The death of Webb brought on a number of changes to the band by Carmichael, such as adding Miles Gilderale as his partner and a move towards a more diverse sound with a number of influences from a variety of genres.

The group has continued to release successful albums, most recently putting out "This Way" in the summer of 2007.
