Lollapalooza

News and Information
Depeche Mode, Tool, The Killers and Jane's Addiction are just some of the bands playing Lollapalooza live from August 7th through 9th in Grant Park in Chicago.

Lollapalooza has shaped what is known as the modern festival, bringing the culture of Woodstock in the 1960s to a different generation in the 1990s and continuing into today. The festival was created by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his then-rock outfit, Janes Addiction. It began as two 1990 performances in California, at venues in San Jose and Los Angeles. The bill featured Iggy Pop, Queen Latifah, Soundgarden, The Cramps, The Indigo Girls, Lenny Kravitz, Joan Baez and Public Enemy.

The festival became a traveling show through United States and Canada, bringing the eclectic group of performers to a broad audience. In 1991, the tour was particularly diverse, including performances from Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, Violent Femmes and Living Colour.

There have been ups and downs with the festival as the alternative music industry has exploded and reclined. In its heyday, crowd surfing and mosh pits were the norm but by 1998 headliners were hard to come by and the festival was cancelled.

In 2003, Farrell re-organized the festival to bring Janes Addiction together again. After two rough years of high ticket prices, Farrell and Capitol Sports & Entertainment turned it into a two-day festival instead of a tour.

The festival celebrated its first year in Grant Park in 2005 with performances by Weezer, Primus, Cake, Widespread Panic, Death Cab for Cutie, Ben Kweller and Liz Phair, among others spread over six stages.

The festival stuck, and the location worked - in 2006 Panic! At the Disco, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley, Kanye West, Ryan Adams, Many Chao, The Flaming Lips and Common, among many others.

In 2007, nine stages boasting hundreds of acts, including Pearl Jam, Modest Mouse, Amy Winehouse, Kings of Leon, Silverchair and Daft Punk. The 2008 show had power performances from Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Kayne West, Wilco, Love and Rockets, and dozens more.

In addition to the performances, there will surely be lots of Lolla spirit - There is a separate space for children with family-oriented workshops, a petting zoo and a dance floor. A stage for competitions, comedy and other activities will be available throughout the weekend.
