311 is touring with Snoop Dogg this summer, bringing the best of the modern rock and rap worlds together on one state.
The sound of 311 is a diverse one - they combine aspects of alternative rock, punk, reggae, funk and hip hop into a popular music that can be found on Top 40 and Adult Contemporary stations.
The group formed in Omaha in 1990 and is now comprised of Nick Hexum on vocals and guitar, SA Martinex on vocals and turntables, P-Nut on bass, Tim Mahoney on guitar and Chad Sexton on percussion. After trying to emerge in the rock game for two years, they were signed to Capricorn Records in 1992 after recording a demo.
Their major-label debut was "Music," released in 1992, which included the successful single "Do You Right." The band broke through on the mainstream with their self-titled album, also known as "The Blue Album." The album included some of their signature songs, including "Down" and "All Mixed Up."
"Transistor" was released in 1997 and featured the hits "Beautiful Disaster," "Transistor" and "Prisoner." As they were gaining fame, the group stayed true to their touring roots. Every other year on "311" day (March 11th or 3/11), the group performs to an extended performance in New Orleans to their most loyal fans. In 2000 they played 47 songs, in 2002 59, in 2004 68 and in 2006 they did 65.
As the band matured, the sound became more laid back, including popular tracks such as "Amber" and a cover of Cures "Love Song." They picked up with even more touring in recent years, including their 2006 "Summer Unity Tour," featuring Pepper and The Wailers, and their follow up in 2007 that included Matisyahu, Shootyz Groove, The Rivalry, Particle and The English Beat.
The band more recently released "Dont Tread on Me" in 2005 and will put out a new album in 2009.
